New Volvo S80: Usual German suspects beware

Evolution. Not revolution. That’s the new S80. Revealed yesterday in these first official images, Volvo’s latest range-topper is no Bangle-esque exercise in outside-of-the-box automotive design. But it’s sleek, attractive and just an extremely polished looking all round effort. Add in a respectable helping of new technology as well as some interesting engines and surely Volvo finally has the goods to take on the Teutonic trio of Audi, BMW and Mercedes?

New TT caught with minimal disguise


Audi’s second-gen TT has been caught by the intrepid, some might say ubiquitous, Mr Hans G Lehmann. Everyone’s favourite tree-dwelling scoop photographer bagged both the hard-top and soft-top models wearing almost no body camo during cold weather testing.

AMG gets serious

Although AMG’s 5.5-litre supercharged V8 has never been short of power, it’s not exactly the most sophisticated lump around. Especially compared with BMW’s high-revving M Power units and Audi’s new Lambo-derived V10 mill. Factor in AMG’s slavish use of torque converter slushboxes - when all the world is currently moving to robotised manual boxes - and it’s no surprise to hear that Mercedes’ in-house tuner has plans to buff up its sporting credentials.

Spare a thought for those pondering the purchase of an Audi Q7. The poor darlings currently have only a 3.0-litre V6 oil burner and a 4.2-litre petrol eight to choose from. Top Gear for Yanks

Rubbishing Americans. Just a hobby for some. But for uber-hack Jeremy Clarkson, it’s a minor artform. So, it’s no surprise to hear that the lanky cigarette smoking machine was recently forced to shoot new insult-free segways and links for a number of repackaged episodes of Top Gear made for the US market. And now Clarkson is being cut out all together. The Americans are making their own all new version of Top Gear.

Prodrive to put P2 into production?

Prodrive’s P2 design study, shown recently at the Autosport International Show, is based on real-world Subaru hardware and certainly looks like a plausible production vehicle. According to a recent report from the US, it might yet be built. But back here in Blighty, home to Prodrive, it’s not looking likely.
