Forgive us the Rumsfeldism, but BMW’s planned shift away from large, multi-cylinder engines towards smaller, more efficient engines is a known known. It’s the details, as the Donmeister would say, that are a known unknown. But try this for size. BMW might be tooling up an uber-high reving four-pot lump for the 1 Series. Creeping gargantuanism. It’s the ever present plague of the modern motor car. So, with each new model BMW’s painfully popular 3 Series coupé gets a little portlier. Take the flagship of the current (non M3) range, the 335i. It clocks in at 1,600kg and is a massive 350mm wider than a mid ‘90s E36 3 Series. BMW’s latest V8-powered M3 coupé is a damn fine thing. But we can’t help mourning the loss of classic six-pot power. But maybe there’s no need. According to a recent report, BMW is preparing to drop the engine into the upcoming 1 Series coupé.
