Three years ahead of its official 2009 launch date, the first full-body Porsche Panamera prototype has been caught testing. For now, there’s a solitary image orbiting the interweb, but it’s enough to confirm that the production Panamera won’t come close to the concept sketches released by Porsche in terms of sleekness. Better late than never. M-B has jumped on the petrol direct injection bandwagon. Of course, calling it plain old direct injection won’t do, so it’s stratified-charged gasoline injection, or CGI for short, in Mercedes-Benz parlance. Anyway, Merc’s first DI engine has been dropped into the slinky CLS four-door coupe just in time for next week’s Geneva shindig. And the good news is that it’s both more powerful and more fuel efficient than the engine it replaces. Cross your fingers, folks, we may yet escape creeping death by diesel…

This is it, ladies and germs. The daddy of SUVs, Euro-style. In fact, even by the grotesque standards of US-market SUVs, the new Mercedes-Benz GL, officially launched today, is a big, bad beast. At over five metres long, nearly two metres wide and not far short of two metres tall the GL simply says “screw you” to modesty, the environment, good taste and everything in its path.
