Drop-top versions of BMW’s M cars are traditionally a little off message when it comes to driving dynamics. That’s the price you pay for hacking the roof off, compromising structural integrity and cranking up the kerb weight. But the new M3 Convertible is the first BMW to feature the firm’s new seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT). So, it’s a little more interesting than your average 155mph sun trap…

Will anything come
out of the many rumours regarding a possible new supercar project
from BMW? Who knows. But if a production car does emerge, it
definitely won’t be a dead ringer for the M1 Hommage concept,
revealed at the weekend. Yes, it’s dramatic. Yes, it’s official BMW
produce. But BMW says the M1 Hommage is nothing more than a 30th
anniversary celebration of the classic M1 supercar…

Bikes may not normally be our bag here on the ‘Wheel (basically, we’re cowards). But this one is a BMW, it’s black, it’s bitchin’ and it looks meaner than Dick Cheney with heart burn. Yes, it’s the new S 1000 RR. For now this is purely a racing bike, but a production model will follow shortly…

Forgive
us the Rumsfeldism, but BMW’s planned shift away from large,
multi-cylinder engines towards smaller, more efficient engines is a
known known. It’s the details, as the Donmeister would
say, that are a known unknown. But try this for size. BMW might be tooling
up an uber-high reving four-pot lump for the 1 Series. How
does 11,000rpm and 260 ponies grab you?

The evidence is anecdotal at best. But it seems the waiting list for BMW’s new M3 may be suffering something of an exodus in the UK. Following several lukewarm road test reports in the usual UK print press publications, web forums are buzzing with customers claiming to have cancelled orders.

BMW’s plans to build a crossover-coupe come SUV aren’t exactly news. But we’d no clear idea of what the new model will look like. Until now, that is. Those tireless, tree-dwelling snappers Brenda Priddy & Co have caught the X6, as it will be known, on the prowl in Germany.

Too soft, too civilised, not special enough. That’s the verdict following the initial round of road tests of BMW’s rather licentiously anticipated new M3 performance coupé. Whoopsie…

Creeping gargantuanism. It’s the ever present plague of the modern motor car. So, with each new model BMW’s painfully popular 3 Series coupé gets a little portlier. Take the flagship of the current (non M3) range, the 335i. It clocks in at 1,600kg and is a massive 350mm wider than a mid ‘90s E36 3 Series. But what if you’re after something a little smaller, more driver focused and, hell, maybe a bit cheaper, too? Well, BMW has just delivered. The new 1 Series Coupé has been unveiled and it will be available with BMW’s mega 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six…

That’ll be three years on the trot, then. Yup, BMW has topped the tables again in the International Engine of the Year award. This year’s triumphant lump is the twin-turbo six pot fitted to the 335i. BMW took the gong in ’05 and ’06 with the V10 screamer from the M5 and M6 models…

BMW’s latest V8-powered M3 coupé is a damn fine thing. But we can’t help mourning the loss of classic six-pot power. But maybe there’s no need. According to a recent report, BMW is preparing to drop the engine into the upcoming 1 Series coupé. Even more tantalising, however, is the prospect of a lightweight Motorsport variant of the next 1 series, powered by a high output four-pot lump and designed to resurrect the finely honed driving experienced delivered by the original E30 M3…

As we reported back in November, Stateside public demand has forced BMW to backtrack on its original decision
not to offer the M5 supersaloon with a triple pedal, stick twiddling transmission
(though European and British buyers remain stuck with the robot box as the only
option). However, justification for BMW’s reluctance has now emerged courtesy
of a report suggesting that the US-only manual M5 suffers from excessive axle
tramp…

Last week, we reported BMW’s official announcement of the widely anticipated and long overdue manual gearbox option for the M5 saloon. Yesterday, BMW confirmed to Newswheel that the company has “no plans” to bring manual versions of either the M5 or the M6 to the UK. In the words of the great Kevin Kline, disappointed!

It should have been this way from the beginning. But BMW has
finally caved in to customer demand and announced a manual transmission for the
M5 saloon. The irony, of course, is that it’s customer demand in the slushbox-loving
US of A that has forced BMW’s hand…

US rag Automobile has done the decent thing and strapped BMW’s new turbo-charged 335i coupe to a dyno. The results are sobering. The magazine tested two cars, both of which comfortably beat BMW’s 306bhp flywheel claim and one briefly peaked at around 300 at-the-wheels ponies…
