The game is up and it’s time to wheel out the euphemisms, chaps. Cue Dieter Zetsche, head honcho of DaimlerChrysler AG: “We substantially overestimated the potential for synergies.” Yup, the Daimler-Chrysler experiment, if you hadn’t already guessed, is no more. Private equity outfit Cerberus Capital Management has agreed to pay 5.5 billion euros ($7.4 billion) for an 80.1% stake in Chrysler…

Newswheel staff :: 22 June 2006 :: Filed under Saloon, Chrysler, Chrysler Sebring, Europe & UK, US
Chrysler’s new Sebring saloon will get its Euro debut at the London motor show in July. Design-wise, the latest Sebring is inspired by the Airflite show car of 2003. But let’s be frank, folks. This is no Audi TT-esque concept-car-for-the-road. Indeed, it’s not a patch on Chrysler’s own fabulously funky 300C full-sized four-door, either. The reality is a conventional four-door barge plastered in fussy styling cues. More’s the pity, for if nothing else the Sebring offers a few interesting technical twists…

Tom LaSorda, Rick Wagoner, and Bill Ford – head honchos of Chrysler, GM and Ford, respectively – have been up on Capitol Hill for a pow-wow with America’s law makers. The main aim of this unholy alliance? To place pots of ethanol fuel under the noses of legislators. Is corn-based fuel the answer to America’s (and by implication, Europe’s) fuel dependence and security problems?

Newswheel staff :: 30 March 2006 :: Filed under Estate/Wagon, Saloon, Chrysler, Chrysler 300C, US
Probably of more interest to NYC limo drivers than Blighty-based car enthusiasts, Chrysler has taken the wraps off a stretched derivative of its smash hit 300C saloon. The headline figures are an additional six inches of girth (that’s 15cm in Euro-friendly metric money) aft of the B-pillar delivering a three cubic metre boost to interior space. The car will be available in both four-door saloon and Touring variants, while engines are the familiar 3.5-litre 250bhp V6 and 5.7-litre 340bhp V8 items. Something to look forward to for those airport transfers, Stateside? Here’s hoping - we certainly won’t miss those crummy Lincoln Towncars…

Leaked images of the Dodge Challenger have been doing the rounds for several weeks. So, these first official pics simply confirm what was already known. The Challenger concept is a real looker. But it’s not the only show car based on the 300C chassis that DaimlerChrysler will be wheeling out at the Detroit show. The Chrysler Imperial concept will also be competing for attention from press and punters alike. And it’s not an unsubtle copy of the Rolls Royce Phantom. Umm-kay?

Developing modern motor cars is a shockingly expensive business. Which explains why German heavyweights and historical sworn enemies VW and DaimlerChyrsler could be hopping into to bed to produce not just a van/MPV, but also a VW Polo-based car.

Take proven German engineering. Add snazzy styling designed to turn heads in the US. And what do you have? Rip roaring success from the Chrysler 300C and a damp squib in the Chrysler Crossfire. Now we hear the Crossfire won’t be replaced. Worse things happen at sea. Probably.
