Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) be gone. After a biblical plague of faults resulting in 100,000 cars recalled in the UK and fully two million worldwide, Mercedes-Benz is cancelling the SBC brake-by-wire system on the E-Class and CLS ranges.

The new car clearly takes some design cues from the recently launched S-Class (and so in turn, from the Maybach uber-limo). After the petrol power wars comes the diesel, er, deathmatch. Audi has seen Merc’s four-litre 314bhp Derv V8 and raised it a 322bhp 4.2-litre oil-burning lump. Which is just as well: we simply don’t get out of bed for less than 300bhp these days.
