It may be a classic British icon. But the modern Mini is firmly in German hands. No use sulking, therefore, about the fact that BMW decided not to bother engineering the new Mini Clubman to suit our crazy right-hand drive needs. For the record, the Clubman is essentially a stretched Mini with increased luggage and passenger space. And it has a funky asymmetric suicide-door layout that ain’t exactly optimal for right-hand drive markets…

Releasing murky teaser photos of highly anticipated new models is an age old PR tactic. But is Skoda being a little optimistic by taking that approach with the distinctly utilitarian new Fabia estate model? Apparently not, because we’re going to play along and publish the photo…

Forget the Audi-bashing elegance of the new S80 and the low key classiness of the XC90 SUV. And don’t be distracted by the surprising funkiness of the C30 coupe-hatchback. Big wagons with enough seats for an army of ill-tempered offspring and ludicrous amounts of luggage is what Volvos, even now, are all about. Right? Well, that and the ability to look after you better than the average barge if you decide you simply can’t be bothered not to park in a ditch at, say, 50mph. The launch of the new V70 premium estate car, therefore, is still a key moment for the Swedish brand…

The Mustang muscle car is one of the very few upbeat plot threads to come out of the woeful overall story arc of Ford Motor Company’s recent performance. What therefore to make of a new report detailing Ford’s plans to launch a whole family of Mustang models in an attempt to cash in on the model’s iconic image?

Newswheel staff :: 19 November 2006 :: Filed under Estate/Wagon, Saloon, Volkswagen, Volkswagen Passat, Europe & UK
Volkswagen has taken the wraps off a new high performance variant of the mid-sized Passat saloon. The Passat R36 packs 296bhp from a new 3.6-litre FSI V6. That’s enough to ensure this is not only the quickest Passat ever, but also the fastest estate car the company has ever wheeled out. OK, the historical competition isn’t exactly hot on either count. But with a zero-to-62mph capability of 5.6 clicks, the R36 certainly shifts. But perhaps more intriguingly, it opens the way for a 300-brake TT R36…

With the all new E still a few years out (due late 2008 by most estimates), MB has released a buffed ‘n polished development of the existing W211 model. Headline news includes six new or significantly revamped engines and more electronic jiggery pokery than you can shake a satnav screen at…

Newswheel staff :: 30 March 2006 :: Filed under Estate/Wagon, Saloon, Chrysler, Chrysler 300C, US
Probably of more interest to NYC limo drivers than Blighty-based car enthusiasts, Chrysler has taken the wraps off a stretched derivative of its smash hit 300C saloon. The headline figures are an additional six inches of girth (that’s 15cm in Euro-friendly metric money) aft of the B-pillar delivering a three cubic metre boost to interior space. The car will be available in both four-door saloon and Touring variants, while engines are the familiar 3.5-litre 250bhp V6 and 5.7-litre 340bhp V8 items. Something to look forward to for those airport transfers, Stateside? Here’s hoping - we certainly won’t miss those crummy Lincoln Towncars…

Flagging sales. A chintzy product line up. A near-destitute sugar daddy in the form of Ford Motor Company. And the indefinite postponement of the platform technology that might just have turned things around. Things are not looking too clever for the rather pitiful pussy that is Jaguar Cars. So, you’ll forgive us for not getting overly juiced up by news that Jag is considering replacing the X-Type with an alternative-concept, shooting brake-style model. At a fundamental level, we’re not convinced the brand is a goer under Ford ownership…

Gentlemen, start your wallets. Audi has released UK pricing for the S6 saloon and estate, yours for £55,330 and £56,600 respectively. While the all-round quality of the drive remains an unknown, that monumental V10 is very unlikely to disappoint. Even if, at 429bhp, it’s down to the tune of 20bhp on the S8’s own Lambo-derived V10 and by around 70bhp on BMW’s ten-pot magnum opus in the M5.

Clearly official PR photographs, but not apparently an official release. Audi is due to wheel out the new All Road at Geneva next week and while there are absolutely no technical deets in the wild, these leaked pictures do at least prove one thing – the vertical chrome grille inserts that first appeared in the TT Shooting brake concept could well become a default feature on many Audis…

A wagonised version of Audi’s M3-spanking RS4? We can jive with that. But despite the availability of an S4 drop-top, we still weren’t expecting the Germans to drop that screamer of a V8 into the bouffant buffer that is the A4 cabriolet…

Newswheel staff :: 23 January 2006 :: Filed under Estate/Wagon, Saloon, Mercedes Benz, Mercedes Benz AMG, Europe & UK, US
Although AMG’s 5.5-litre supercharged V8 has never been short of power, it’s not exactly the most sophisticated lump around. Especially compared with BMW’s high-revving M Power units and Audi’s new Lambo-derived V10 mill. Factor in AMG’s slavish use of torque converter slushboxes - when all the world is currently moving to robotised manual boxes - and it’s no surprise to hear that Mercedes’ in-house tuner has plans to buff up its sporting credentials.

In an age of crossover vehicles, cab-forward architectures and out-of-the-box thinking, the traditional estate seems like a rather frumpy concept. But as the original Audi RS4 Audi proved, if it’s the ultimate combination of practicality and performance you fancy, a souped-up wagon is very tough to beat. So, we’re pleased to see that all three of Germany’s heavy metal car makers are preparing hardcore performance versions of their full-sized estate models.

Despite the dodgy Bangle-era styling, it seems the BMW 3 Series remains invincible. US sales figures (BMW’s second largest market) for the new Three have been released and the big news is that there’s no news. BMW’s finest still takes a large stick to the opposition, selling nearly 40 per cent more units than any other car in its class.

Saab ain’t gonna like this. But it’s impossible to begin any discussion of the revised 9-5 without dropping the following bombs. Firstly, this car is eight years old. In an age of ever shrinking product cycles, that’s positively antediluvian. But worse, it shares its core underpinnings with none other than GM’s ghastly previous generation Vectra. Yuck…

Hands up those who thought the Peugeot 407’s elephantine front grille was its finest stylistic feature…Nope, we didn’t think so either. So, we’re not crazy about the idea of grafting it onto the pretty 307 hatchback.
