When Fiat wheeled out the petite but perfect Trepiůno concept back in 2004, it looked like a no brainer for the transition to full production. This, surely, was exactly the type of chic and sophisticated city car the Italian firm did better than everyone else. And precisely the sort of car Fiat needed to be making to secure the company’s long term future and resuscitate its flat-lining brand. In the ‘80s it was Lamborghini’s LM002 which provided the affluent 4x4 fraternity with the ultimate in bling. In the ‘90s that dubious honour transferred to the Hummer, and now in the mid naughties it seems Fiat fancies a shot at the title with the seven-tonne Oltre show vehicle, recently unveiled at the Bologna Motor Show.

Apparently there’s a price war going on in continental Europe. Margins and profits are being eroded, with Renault, Honda, Peugeot and Fiat all complaining of a poor pricing environment. Try telling that to your average car buyer in “Rip Off” Britain…

Fiat has wheeled out a special edition Panda at the Tokyo show. With a two-tone orange and white paint job and matching interior highlights the Panda Alessi either bravely drops ice cubes down the vest of conventional good taste or suggests the Italian car maker is a few cogs short of a full box. Whatever, the really interesting news is that it’s the real deal. European sales start next spring.
