Newswheel staff :: 16 October 2006 :: Filed under Lotus, Proton, Europe & UK, US
Fact: Proton was founded 23 years ago by Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of the car maker’s motherland, Malaysia, for 22 long years from 1981 to 2003. So, when Dr. Mahatir says Proton, owner of Lotus since 1996, is near collapse, well, it’s worth paying attention…

Worrying command-economy connotations aside, just what to make of Lotus’s recently announced new five-year plan? Well, Lotus is certainly the sort of company where a major meltdown has always seemed a realistic possibility, even during the rudely healthy heyday of the Elise. Whatever, the company has announced a new mid-range model for 2008, along with a new Lotus/Proton high performance car and the delay of the Esprit until the fag end of 2009…

An Elise variant too far. That’s the overall impression from the first round of road tests of Lotus’s latest in UK print magazines. Indeed, it’s telling that weekly title Autocar doesn’t even give the Europa S pride of place on its cover. That’s got to be a first for a new Lotus model…

Not another five-year plan, surely? What with the Stalinist connotations and
Lotus’s track-record for the unceremonious defenestration of said
far-reaching future formulations, you might expect the Hethel-based
sports car maker to steer well clear. Nope. This week’s Autocar

name is familiar the reason is simple: this is Kimberly’s second
innings at the helm of Lotus) in which the company’s new model roadmap
is divulged in (not a great deal of) detail…

Another month, another Lotus Elise model. But instead of the usual pimped-out performance special, Lotus has launched a new entry-level offering, the Elise S. Powered by a detuned version of the Toyota 1.8-litre VVT-i lump, the S can be yours for a piffling £23,995. That’s fully £4,000 cheaper than the previous starter model, the 111R (now known simply as the Elise R)…

Lotus knocks up a crossover vehicle? Yup, but don’t whip out the oriental disembowelling cutlass just yet. The British sportscar maker hasn’t sold out à la Porsche Cayenne. The APX is a client-wooing exercise for Lotus Engineering, designed to show off the merits of its VVA architecture and a new engine. And very definitely not a vehicle that has any chance of seeing production with a Lotus badge on the front.
