Newswheel staff :: 03 August 2007 :: Filed under Saloon, Mercedes Benz, Mercedes Benz E-Class
Well, possibly. Motorauthority has shopped up some renderings showing how the next E-Class, due out in 2009, might just look. Plenty of styling cues have been taken from the recently refreshed entry-level C-Class saloon, while the overall vibe is crisper and more dynamic than the rather bland jelly-mould aesthetic of the current E-Class…

Tricky to know for sure what Mercedes' next move in the high-end sports car market will be. What with rumours of a mid-engine supercar resurrected from the failing ambers of the McLaren partnership and more recently reports of a new alloy front-engine coupe, a model that’s expected to share its underpinnings with the next SL…

The game is up and it’s time to wheel out the euphemisms, chaps. Cue Dieter Zetsche, head honcho of DaimlerChrysler AG: “We substantially overestimated the potential for synergies.” Yup, the Daimler-Chrysler experiment, if you hadn’t already guessed, is no more. Private equity outfit Cerberus Capital Management has agreed to pay 5.5 billion euros ($7.4 billion) for an 80.1% stake in Chrysler…

Let’s be honest. MB’s SLR supercoupe doesn’t really add up. Perhaps it’s the gloopy, unsubtle ‘90s concept car styling. Or maybe the torque-converter gearbox which belies its supercar pretensions. And what about the hair-trigger brakes? Whatever, the SLR is neither fish nor foul, sportscar nor luxury coupe. But that hasn’t stopped Mercedes from attempting to reignite interest in the long-nosed road missile with this new drop-top revision…

It’s bigger, safer, faster, stiffer, pointier and, well, all the usual jazz. Mercedes has taken the wraps of the latest C-Class saloon and predictably it’s heaving with new technology and features including adaptive damping as standard on every car…

It’s hardly a surprising move. But it could produce a world beating package. Mercedes-Benz has shoe horned AMG’s new naturally aspirated V8 powerhouse into the sleek CL coupe. The CL63 joins the increasingly impressive list of Paris show debutants due to be unveiled at the end of the month…

Ponder, if you will, the current Mercedes-Benz SUV model range: the old-timer G-Class, revamped M-Class and the crazy-big new GL-Class. Suffice to say, M-B has plenty of SUV metal on its books. So, where exactly does that leave the six-seater, all-wheel-drive R-Class? Somewhere spanning the amorphous “crossover” divide between an upper-segment family, executive or estate car and an SUV or an MPV, that’s where. But precisely what kind of customer is supposed to offload the significant sum of £74,115 on the new range-topping R, the R63? It isn’t exactly obvious…

With 517bhp and 612lb/ft on tap from a twin-turbo, 5.5-litre V12, Merc’s range-topping SL600 coupe-cabriolet isn’t exactly short on shove. Which makes you wonder what exactly is the point of Merc’s in-house 612bhp, 737lb/ft hot rod version, the painfully pricey SL65 AMG? Perhaps a stab at the title of the most pointlessly powerful roadster on the planet? If so, then bad luck to Mercedes and AMG, because German tuning house Brabus has peeled back the wraps on its own contender, the 730bhp SV12 S…

M-B put on a private viewing of the new CL coupe this weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. In a sealed room on the Mercedes stand well-heeled punters were given a tour of the flagship coupe’s literally ludicrous litany of high-tech features. If active seat bolsters, infra red night vision, soft-closing doors and double-glazed windows are your bag, look no further…

Newswheel staff :: 26 June 2006 :: Filed under Coupe, Mercedes Benz, Mercedes Benz CL coupe, Europe & UK, US
Just days after images leaked onto the web, Mercedes has gone official with the new CL coupe. So what’s new? Well, the CL is bigger in every dimension than its predecessor and predictably packs more electrickery than you can shake a distronic parking sensor at. The new model is also surely a stylistic step forward over the faintly chintzy outgoing model. Not that M-B has completely managed to shake off its current tendency towards niggling naffness. With no less than seven “V12” badges scattered liberally inside and out, including a quartet of extremely dubious plaques sown into the seat backs (classy!) and a particularly nasty exampled bolted front and centre to the dashboard, an exercise in subtle superiority the tip top CL 600 model is most definitely not…

Another day, another premature image exposé. Today’s victim is none other than that titanic Teuton of motor manufacturing, Mercedes-Benz. Of course, it’s possible that M-B has indulged in a spot of guerrilla marketing for the new CL coupe with an intentional image leak. Whatever the truth, these apparently official images confirm that recent spyshots and cg renders in the usual German car rags were indeed accurate. Merc’s range topping uber-coupe is a significant stylistic departure from the S-Class limo, with which it shares a chassis, oily bits and electric gizmos…

Reluctant though we are to pass on press release-propogated tidings of sales joy, we’ll allow MB its moment of glory. Eight months in and 50,000 units sold worldwide, Mercedes’ new S-Class is already slapping the opposition around with a large stick. “The car’s innovations in particular have been groundbreaking for the automotive industry, and they are the primary reason why the S-Class has maintained a unique status within the luxury segment for decades,” gushed spokesMerc Dr. Klaus Maier. Of course, the fact that the S-Class no longer looks like some kind of Ssangyong-built simulacrum probably doesn’t hurt…

Topping the list of the existing Mercedes SLK 55 AMG’s short comings is definitely not a lack of power. The 5.5-litre 345bhp V8 crammed into the engine compartment makes sure of that. But this is AMG. So, ours is not to reason why the world needs an SLK 55 AMG Special Series (yes really, Special Series) with an extra 55 ponies. Ours it but to report with a weary sigh…

Mercedes' R-Class SUV/MPV crossover has only been on sale for months.
But it’s quickly heading for poo-creek-but-no-paddle status. Far from
creating a lucrative new model niche, disappointing sales in the US
have forced parent company DaimlerChrysler to offer dealers $5,000
incentives to shift the apparently unwanted barge. Making matters
worse, the car is reported to have been plagued by technical issues…

Newswheel staff :: 14 April 2006 :: Filed under Coupe, Front engine sportscar, Mercedes Benz, Mercedes Benz SLR, Europe & UK, US
MB is prepping upgrades for its carbon-fibre colossus, the SLR. The power output of the blown AMG V8 is expected to be cranked up from 626 frisky ponies to a fulsome 650 horses (of the Euro PS sort). Additional tweaks for the 2007 SLR “Sportpack” include a revised interior, fettled brakes, a new wheel design and a 40kg reduction in overall weight. Anticipated performance improvements are 0.2 seconds off the mad dash to 62mph (that’s 100kph to our Euro friends), now completed in just 3.6 seconds and 125mph in just 10.2 seconds, down from 10.6…

Better late than never. M-B has jumped on the petrol direct injection bandwagon. Of course, calling it plain old direct injection won’t do, so it’s stratified-charged gasoline injection, or CGI for short, in Mercedes-Benz parlance. Anyway, Merc’s first DI engine has been dropped into the slinky CLS four-door coupe just in time for next week’s Geneva shindig. And the good news is that it’s both more powerful and more fuel efficient than the engine it replaces. Cross your fingers, folks, we may yet escape creeping death by diesel…

Mercedes is currently buffing up its new entry-level, BMW X3-bashing SUV. Both cars have been caught testing by the relentless Hans G Lehmann and chums.
