We still can’t fathom why race and rally car specialists Prodrive chose the utterly unprepossessing Subaru R1 city car as the basis for an ultra high-performance coupe concept. But thanks to the latest episode of Top Gear, we at least now know that the Prodrive P2 is near-as-dammit as quick a Pagani Zonda. Oh, and it handles so well it’ll make you sick…

Prodrive’s P2 design study, shown recently at the Autosport International Show, is based on real-world Subaru hardware and certainly looks like a plausible production vehicle. According to a recent report from the US, it might yet be built. But back here in Blighty, home to Prodrive, it’s not looking likely.

To Brits with an interest in World Rally or chintzed-out Subaru Imprezas, Prodrive is already a household name. What level of awareness the suits at big car companies have of Prodrive’s production car engineering capabilities, however, is another matter. So, the race and rally car preparation specialist has knocked up this “technology demonstrator” with a view to drumming up some business.
