It’s a dead ringer for the Le Mans concept. It’s closely related to the Lamborghini Gallardo. And it’s powered by a V8 lump pinched from the RS4 saloon. Great car, the Gallardo. But thanks to that four-wheel drivetrain, most think it’s a little too safe and secure to be a classic Lambo. That all-weather tackle also helps to push the car’s kerbweight over the 1,500kg mark. What we really want is an edgier, lighter, rear-wheel-drive-only Gallardo. And that’s exactly what we’re going to get, according to Lamborghini’s head Honcho Stephan Winkelmann.

Audi’s Le Mans concept has already been confirmed for production. And now Audi has announced that the storming mid-engined sportscar will be called the R8 when it hits the road in 2007. But with no official technical details available, fisticuffs are brewing over what engine will power the new car.
