Simple, understated elegance. Not much of that in evidence on the Geneva show floor this year. Mercedes, for instance, gave up on it over a decade ago. Audi, of course, has recently binned it in favour of garish grilles and exaggerated body creases. BMW’s Bangle-era barges are about as restrained as Dick Cheney in huntin’ season. And the less said about the chintz-fest that is Jaguar’s current range (new XK aside) the better. So, it falls to Volvo, among the premium Euro brands, to go after the discreet money with the rather lovely new S80.

Evolution. Not revolution. That’s the new S80. Revealed yesterday in these first official images, Volvo’s latest range-topper is no Bangle-esque exercise in outside-of-the-box automotive design. But it’s sleek, attractive and just an extremely polished looking all round effort. Add in a respectable helping of new technology as well as some interesting engines and surely Volvo finally has the goods to take on the Teutonic trio of Audi, BMW and Mercedes?

While Jaguar slowly but surely crumbles, another part of Ford’s Premier Automotive Group is looking stonger by the day. Volvo is currently tooling up to release a new flagship S80 saloon at the Geneva in March. Sleeker styling and possibly a new V8 lump are likely highlights.

Volvo is getting serious about taking on the big German brands. Reports that the next S80, due to be unveiled at the Geneva motorshow in March, will pack V8 power have reached critical mass.
