Saab tarts up 9-3

Due out later this year, these are the first official images of the facelifted Saab 9-3. At least, that’s what they purport to be. And frankly, a mildly tweaked 9-3 isn’t something you’d expect anyone would bother to fake. So, we’ll give these leaked snaps the benefit of the doubt…

Saab preps Aero-X-based compact sports car

Not exactly a new story. And hardly our favourite source for rock solid new model reportage. So, what to make of news from UK rag AutoExpress that Saab is working on a small sportster with Aero-X-aping styling to take on Audi’s all-conquering TT? Well, rumours of a sporty Saab built on GM’s compact Kappa rear-drive platform (as used by the Saturn Sky, Pontiac Solstice and Opel GT roadster trio) have been circulating for some time. And given the rapturous reception the Aero-X concept received at the Geneva, Saab’s suits must be desperate to put something similar into production…

Newswheel @ Geneva: Saab Aero-X

Duly the Saab Aero-X did make its debut appearance at the Geneva show. And duly did the industry analysts, general chin scratchers and career trash talkers condemn the concept as the last twitch of a decaying corpse. Shame, really. If there was a more attractive concept at Geneva, we didn’t see it…

Geneva leakage: Saab Aero-X

As we slavishly reported earlier in the month, Saab is tooling up to demo its new design language at the Geneva show, in the form of a coupe. This coupe, in fact. Known as the Aero-X, leaked images have been doing the usual rounds on the intraweb and thus in the time honoured me-too tradition we present them to you…

Geneva preview: Saab’s new design language

Where exactly is Saab headed? With the latest rehash of the 9-5 saloon giving Saab aficionados the heebie jeebies, all eyes will be on the struggling Swedish marque’s stand at the Geneva show. A concept sports car will be on show that presages the company’s  new design direction.

No Saab Solstice (UPDATED)

The possibility of a Saab version of the Kappa compact rear-drive sports car platform, as used on the Pontiac Solstice, is no longer. According to Jay Spenchian, general manager for Saab in the US, the car has been exorcised from the company’s plans. Add in the cancellation of the Subaru Tribeca-based SUV, poor sales of the 9-2X in the US and the geriatric state of the 9-5 saloon and you have to wonder what the future holds for the beleaguered Swedish firm…

E85: fuel fantasy or real deal? (UPDATED)

You like cars. We like cars. Especially when they have rip rorting combustion engines. Problem is, the petrol engine as we know it is not long for this world. But what if there was an alternative fuel that was 80 per cent greener but actually made your car faster? This is one dreary tech story you just have to read…

First drive: Saab 9-5

Saab ain’t gonna like this. But it’s impossible to begin any discussion of the revised 9-5 without dropping the following bombs. Firstly, this car is eight years old. In an age of ever shrinking product cycles, that’s positively antediluvian. But worse, it shares its core underpinnings with none other than GM’s ghastly previous generation Vectra. Yuck…

GM dumps Saab

GM is planning to offload its 20 per cent holding in Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries. And you know what that means, don’t you? No more Saabarus. Say it ain’t so!

Saab to sustain suckage

Is there a worthy brand that gets a crappier deal from its parent company than Saab? Unfortunately, if a recent report in UK magazine Car is anything to go by, there’s not much light at the end of the tunnel. Instead, the litany of dodgy reskinned GM metal will continue.

Saab supersizes

We’re beginning to think GM really has it in for poor old Saab. May we introduce a re-panelled, 5.3L push-rod V8 version of the dynamic tour de force that is(n’t) the Chevy TrailBlazer. Known as the Saab 9-7x, it’s now available in the US. How depressing…
