V-Dub concept previews next-gen Scirocco

SCIROCCO. A distinctly unpromising jumble of letters in a game of Scrabble, hot Sicilian winds and double word scores aside. But an evocative name to VW-fancying car enthusiasts across the globe. So evocative, in fact, VW reckons the abbreviated “Iroc” moniker of this Paris Motor Show-headed concept will be enough to whet appetites for its much rumoured PQ35 platform-based production sports coupe, due out in 2008. Scirocco silly season

Beat us wafer thin with a steak tenderiser if we’re wrong. But the original VW Scirocco was a rather unprepossessing little hatchback. A Golf with a chopped roof and not much by way of dynamic addendum pretty much sums it up. So, quite why the prospect of an all-new Scirocco has inspired an army of Photoshop-addicted rumour mongers to crank out a seemingly infinite catalogue of rum renderings, we know not.  Especially since it’s the Corrado, not the Scirocco, that many still regard as one of the finest-handling front-drive cars of all time. Whatever, the latest riff on the ongoing Scirocco saga comes courtesy of US rag Autoweek, which weaves a tale of internal squabbles and design disagreements at VW headquarters…

Scirocco, Corrado or Rivo?

Back in September we reported on VW’s plans to resurrect the Scirocco compact coupe. Then, the car was expected to be powered by VW’s impressive new 1.4-litre Twincharger engine. Now reports are emerging that it will boast a full range of the usual VW engine suspects, including the gutsy 3.2-litre 250bhp V6.
