Ford preps mega Mustang for New York show

So, Ford has offloaded Aston Martin to Dave Richards and his band of merry (and considerably richer than thou) men in return for a modest 500 million sterling sum. But with its losses measured in many billions, FoMoCo ain’t quite back in the black. Still, that hasn’t prevented the boys from Ford and Shelby from prepping a mega-powerful limited production Mustang. Known as the Shelby Cobra GT500KR, it’s claimed to be quickest production Mustang ever launched …

C-XF concept debuts, Ford confirms Jaguar not for sale

Given the rollercoaster ride that is Ford’s day-to-day existence, we’ll forgive you for taking this with a pinch of salt. But the Blue Oval’s new head honcho Alan Mulally spake thusly to the assembled throng at the Detroit motor show: “Jaguar is not for sale at this time.” Meanwhile, the wraps have come off the company’s latest show car, the C-XF…

Newswheel @ the Paris show: Gratuitous R8 image whorage

Just can’t get enough of Audi’s natty new R8 mid-engine sportster? Well, allow us to further fill your boots. Along with a pair of fully built R8s, Audi also had a cut-away car with the full beauty of the aluminium space frame construction on display. Meanwhile, a few more details of Audi’s new flagship ubercar are creeping in. For starters, UK pricing will hit the £76,000 mark, pegging the R8 at a few grand more than Porsche’s 911 Carrera 4 (yours for around £72k). What’s more, a V10 model using the Gallardo’s 500bhp lump is expected to appear in 2008…

Newswheel @ the Paris show: Chinese car companies you ain’t never heard of

Thought that chintzy Chinese companies with faintly comical brand names were the preserve of £25 DVD players with piracy-friendly DivX support? Well, think again. At the Paris show, the Chinese are out in force and some of their products look pretty damn plausible…

Newswheel @ the Paris show: Hatchback hotness. VW’s Iroc Concept, Honda Civic Type-R, Renault Twingo

Crusty old form factors like C-segment saloons may be dying a slow, undignified death at the hands of MPV and crossover upstarts. But the hatchback is alive and kicking in 2006. VW, Honda, Renault and Volvo are all keeping the hot hatch real at the Paris show…

Newswheel @ the Paris motor show: Audi R8 (UPDATED)

It’s a dead ringer for the Le Mans concept. It’s closely related to the Lamborghini Gallardo. And it’s powered by a V8 lump pinched from the RS4 saloon. In short, there’s nothing remotely surprising about it. But it’s still the no-contest star of the Paris show. Audi unsheathed the new R8 mid-engined sportster today and suffice to say the car is pure class from bumper to bumper…

Newswheel @ the British Motor Show: Noble M15

When Noble originally wheeled out the M15 as the replacement for the stillborn M14 mid-engined sportster, well, let’s just say we weren’t exactly whelmed. But now that we’ve seen the M15 in the GRP we’ve a confession to make. It’s not half as hideous as we’d thought…

Newswheel @ the British Motor Show: Honda Civic three-door

Few surprises, here. The mid-90s concept car aesthetic of the fivedoor Civic has survived the transition to a three-door form factor. The model’s defining exterior detail is probably the aggressively raked windscreen. But the unashamedly techno vibe of the wrap-around interior is our favourite feature. It’s the sort of cabin that makes you want to fire the engine up and give the car a vicious spanking. The Type-R is going to be an absolute riot…

Newswheel @ the British Motor Show: Vauxhall / Opel Corsa

The second big premier at ExCel is Vauxhall’s new entry-level hatch, the Corsa. We’ll give it a general thumbs up, largely thanks to some taut exterior surfacing and a few nicely bevelled-and-chamfered edges that add up to a well-hewn and solid presence (apart from the odd dodgy panel gap on what we assume were preproduction cars on the show stand). The three-door model is definitely a looker and manages to avoid the pong of garishness that emanates from the tri-door Astra Sport Hatch…

London Land Speed record lark

The British Motorshow may be something of an illegitimate backstairs sprog compared to the majesty of the Frankfurt and Geneva shindigs. But hats off to Autocar magazine for attempting to lift the event’s profile. This July, Autocar will be hosting a Land Speed competition at City Airport, timed to coincide with the London show. The Guinness Book of World Records will be on board for the showdown which will involve a rolling start followed by a sprint down the facility’s mile-long runway. And as Autocar Ed Rob Aherne saliently suggests, braking performance will be at a premium. The runway ends next to a dock…

Newswheel @ Geneva: Saab Aero-X

Duly the Saab Aero-X did make its debut appearance at the Geneva show. And duly did the industry analysts, general chin scratchers and career trash talkers condemn the concept as the last twitch of a decaying corpse. Shame, really. If there was a more attractive concept at Geneva, we didn’t see it…

Newswheel @ Geneva: Opel GT

Let’s be honest. When we heard the sophisticated Lotus Elise-based Vauxhall VX220 / Opel Speedster was being replaced by the dumbed down Saturn Sky-derived Opel GT there was very little rejoicing. But we can’t deny it. The GT was one of the few cars at Geneva – in the sensible money sector, at least – that looked thoroughly ripe for a twisty road spanking.

Newswheel @ Geneva: A tale of two coupe-cabriolets

On paper, it’s no contest. The Eos not only packs the classier VW badge. It also has a completely unique body that enables it to sneer at the hatchback derived likes of Ford’s new Focus CC. But in the metal, there’s a lot less separating Ford’s new folding hard-top equipped Focus from VW’s much delayed Golf-based Eos. Both are elegant, desirable and a clear cut above Peugeot’s 307 CC, the Opel/Vauxhall TwinTop and the Renault Megane Coupe-Cabriolet.

Newswheel @ Geneva: Honda Civic Type-R concept

Newswheel @ Geneva: Volvo S80

Simple, understated elegance. Not much of that in evidence on the Geneva show floor this year. Mercedes, for instance, gave up on it over a decade ago. Audi, of course, has recently binned it in favour of garish grilles and exaggerated body creases. BMW’s Bangle-era barges are about as restrained as Dick Cheney in huntin’ season. And the less said about the chintz-fest that is Jaguar’s current range (new XK aside) the better.  So, it falls to Volvo, among the premium Euro brands, to go after the discreet money with the rather lovely new S80.
