Audi preps diesel TT

With this year’s 24 Heures du Mans already in the bag thanks to the revolutionary diesel-powered R10 racer, Audi is planning to cash in on its competition success with an oil-burning version of the new TT coupe. New TT a Cayman killer?

A bog standard, rebodied Golf was what we were expecting. A hybrid steel and aluminium superstructure with carefully optimised weight distribution was what we got. Yup, when Audi first dished the deets on the second-gen TT it was obvious the Ingolstadt outfit was serious about making it a car that real driving enthusiasts, and not just poseurs in Pimlico, could aspire to own…unlike the seriously stodgy Golf IV-derived original TT. And so it has proven, according to the first road tests of the new TT. The UK’s Autocar mag reckons the latest TT is a potential Cayman killer, while the motoring journalist currently known as Clarkson is all in a tizz about the car’s “crackle and fizz.”

Tantalising TT prices

Audi has released official UK pricing for the all new TT. And the good news is that despite a mammoth technical overhaul, Audi has pegged prices close to those of the original car. The front-wheel-drive-only model, powered by the same 200bhp-ish direct injection lump as the current Golf GTI, kicks off at £24,625 while the range-topping 3.2-litre Quattro model is yours for a mere 29,285. For the record, the old 3.2 Quattro was priced at £28,960. So, that’s a brand new, light weight TT built on a unique space frame chassis for barely any more than the old Golf-based model. Yup, they might just find a few homes for these puppies…

New Audi TT gets space frame chassis (UPDATED)

Replacing an iconic car like the original TT is a tough task. And given Audi’s recent design diversions – that’ll be a big grille up front and an unsightly crease down the side – one we had suspected it might not manage. But have no fear, ladies and germs. The new TT, unveiled at multiple launch events across the globe yesterday, is definitely a looker. But even better, it’s not just yet another rebodied Golf. Thanks to an apparently all-new space frame chassis, it looks like Audi has made an honest sports car out of the new TT…

Audi TT: Lift off on April 6th

A trio of V10 mega-models including a mid-engined supercar. An uber SUV. And a mid-sized concept-turned-reality coupe (that’ll be the Nuvolari-inspired A5 coupe). These are just a few of Audi’s recent and upcoming efforts. Oh yes, the German outfit just keeps cranking out fancy new metal. But perhaps the most important model Audi will launch this year, at least in terms of setting out Audi’s style stall, is the new TT. And now the word has come down: it’ll be unveiled at a trio of big money launch parties in Berlin, London and NYC on April 6th…

TT teasers (UPDATED)

Officially inked in for full public exposure on the 6th of April, Audi is trying awfully hard to build up some steam for the new TT by releasing a couple of teaser images. Whether you care or not probably depends on whether style or driving dynamics are your bag.  The new TT may be based on the latest – much improved  – Golf chassis. But the odds of it delivering a driving experience to give Porsche’s Boxster wet pants are slim to none. It will almost definitely, however, be a damn fine looking car…
