10 years and 200,000 units: The Boxster comes of age

Cayman included…

Porsche, if you’ve somehow failed to notice, is in rude health. The latest symptom of the German sports car outfit’s magnificent malaise is the announcement that the 200,000th Boxster roadster has rolled off the production line. The company is currently knocking them out at a rate of around 27,000 a year, significantly up on the 15,000 unit volume Porsche had originally hoped for way back in 1996 when the Boxster was launched…

It’s worth noting that the figures include the newish Cayman coupe, which Porsche describes as being part of the “Boxster model series”. Worth noting, that is, because of the peculiar pricing strategy in which the tin-top Cayman costs several thousand more than the drop-top Boxster, despite drivetrain parity and the fact that almost every other model line from any manufacturer you care to mention (including Porsche’s own 911) costs more as a cabriolet. In this context, take “peculiar” as a euphemism for distinctly dodgy.

Anywho, for the record, 40 per cent of Boxster production makes its way to the US of A, with the German market picking up second spot on around 20 per cent. Price anomalies aside, long live the Boxster.
