335i cranks out impressive dyno results

A horse is a horse
US rag Automobile has done the decent thing and strapped BMW’s new turbo-charged 335i coupe to a dyno. The results are sobering. The magazine tested two cars, both of which comfortably beat BMW’s 306bhp flywheel claim and one briefly peaked at around 300 at-the-wheels ponies…
The first 335i flogged by Automobile magazine posted rear-wheel figures of 275hp and 300lb/ft. Pretty impressive given the 33 degrees C ambient air temperature during the test. And especially so given that blown engines tend to wilt even more rapidly than naturally aspirated lumps as temperatures creep up. Factor in a typical drivetrain loss of at least 15 per cent and you’re looking at a flywheel output of more than 315bhp. Nice.
Of course, a sample of one makes for very poor statistics. So, when Automobile got their hands on a second 335i, it was off to the dyno again. This time, however, the air temperature was only 26 degrees and the alternate 335i cranked out at-the-wheels results of 285hp, 282hp and 287hp on separate runs. The mag also discovered that the car briefly peaked at 299.93 on one run, an aberration Automobile reckons is a function of the temporary overboost most computer management systems for turbo engines allow.
Needless to say, dyno results are notoriously tricky to interpret. A single example of any given car model can produce widely varying results, even on the same day using the same dynamometer. Still, we’ll eat our hats if BMW’s official figures for the 335i aren’t at least a little conservative.
