Four-wheel drive only for glass-roofed chariot
Following last month’s bout of undisguised spy shots, Porsche has officially taken the wraps off the 911 Targa. Apart from the glass roof, the big news is that the 997-vintage Targa will only be available in Targa 4 and Targa 4S four-wheel drive trim…

Of course, the other consequence of the 4 and 4S-only specification is that all Targas will be fitted with widebody rear wheel arches – up by 44mm over a boggo 911. Given the car’s inevitable poseur status (a large, heavy lump of glass in the roof will do little for the 911’s centre of gravity and handling), the compulsory widebody is probably pure gravy for the Targa’s target market.
Power is as per existing 911 Carrera 4 and 4S models (so, that’s 325bhp and 355bhp respectively). Likewise the Visco multi-plate clutch four-wheel drive system which delivers up to 40 per cent of torque to the front wheels, depending on available grip.
As for that sliding glass roof, Porsche reckons it delivers a half-metre open-air aperture and takes seven seconds open or close. Made of two-ply tinted glass, it’s claimed to be 1.9kg lighter than the panel fitted to the old 996 Targa. There’s also a new sealing system which minimises wind noise and a deflector to reduce turbulence at speed. A pop-up rear screen supported by gas struts is also part of the Targa package and provides access to 230 litres of luggage capacity (with the rear seats folded).
Sausage-side prices, including the taxman’s pound of flesh, are 91,843 euros for the 911 Targa 4 and 102,167 euros for the more powerful S version. Sales start in November – watch this space for UK pricing and availability.
