A Rolls for proles: More details emerge, 7 Series technology mooted

Cheap at twice the price?
Rolls of Royce fame recently announced plans for a smaller, more affordable model. It’s all relative, of course. The long-rumoured Rolls for comparative proles will be pitched into the €2-300,000 (£135,000 - £200,000) space and will be launched within four years. No official technical details have been released by Rolls. But who needs official announcements? Wild-eyed speculation is much more fun…
The UK’s Car Magazine is first off the blocks with a plausible claim that the so-called NGS (New Generation Saloon) will be based on BMW 7 Series mechanicals. It might be cheaper and smaller than the company’s sole existing model, the Phantom, therefore. But it will still be a very large motor car by the standards of most mere mortals with a kerb weight well north of 2,000kg. Car magazine puts the overall length at 5,500mm and predicts a wheelbase of 3,500mm. As for styling, the smart money is on a pinched and squished Phantom with an extremely short front overhang and more flowing lines courtesy of a steeply raked screen.
Power is expected to be delivered by BMW’s new N74 V12 unit in 544bhp trim. A twin-turbo uber-NGS to take on Merc’s similarly motivated Maybach 57S is also a possibility. Here’s hoping it looks every bit as sexy as the Car mag artist’s impression.
