Carbon-bodied coupe
The final production version of Alfa’s awesome Maserati-powered coupe will be unveiled at the Paris motor show later this month. Power comes courtesy of Maser’s familiar 90 degree bent-eight in 4.7-litre 450bhp trim…
The 8C Competizione’s basic layout is a classic transaxle design - a front-engine, rear-drive configuration with the V8 mounted behind the front axle and the gearbox at the rear. Speaking of the cog-swapper, it seems that the robotised electronic manual six-speed box will be the only option. Structurally, the 8C is based on a compact steel frame draped in carbon-fibre body panels.

Carbon body. Steel chassis. 470bhp of Maser V8. And no longer just a show car (click for high res images)
Chassis highlights include double wishbones all round, 20-inch rims and the obligatory stability control systems. Oh, and the car is likely to be a gutsy real world performer rather than a highlg strung race replica: 80 per cent of the V8’s 347lb/ft of torque is available at just 2,000rpm.
Meanwhile…Alfa’s Paris show resurgence will also showcase the company’s new Q2 self-locking front differential on the 147. The Q2 appears to be a conventional Torsen limited-slip diff and will initially only be available with the 150bhp JTDm engine.
P.S. We’ll leave you with this choice cut from the Q2 press release:
“The Alfa Romeo engineers were fortunate because front wheel drive already enjoys an excellent reputation among their customers (it is no mere chance that this alternative is chosen by most car manufacturers). Suffice it to say that over and above the general benefits of this type of structure (weight, passenger room etc.), the understeering behaviour of a front wheel drive engine allows the driver to respond to vehicle stress more intuitively under limit conditions: hence the feeling that front wheel drive is ‘more sincere’ than rear wheel drive.”
Pity those 8C Competizione owners and their insincere rear-drive sports cars.
