Alfa Romeo 8C Spider bags awards, production prospects grow

Alfa keeps milking its coupe and convertible concept cows
First shown back in the mists of 2003 at the Frankfurt motor show, Alfa’s swoopy carbon-fibre coupe, the 8C Competizione has never been short of admirers. And in drop top format it’s picking up even more, including the judges at this year’s Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance on the banks of Lake Como in Italy. The 8C Spider swiped the “Villa d’Este Design Award” and the “BMW Group Design Award”, both for concept cars…
We’ve said it before, and we’ll jolly well say it again, putting 8C into production is a no-brainer – it would inject some badly needed credibility into the slightly beleaguered Italian brand. But this being Alfa, of course, things are never so simple. Parent company Fiat is hardly flush with funds for such a project. Nevertheless, with Alfa continuing to keep 8C concept variants firmly in the public eye and a recent statement of intent by Alfa’s new CEO Antonio Baravalle, the prospects for production look better than ever.
