Nuvolari styling meets A4 underpinnings

Entering the online and print-based top ten rumour ranking this week is the upcoming Audi A5 coupe. We reported back in May that the rather tasty Nuvolari concept had been given the green light for production and would appear as a mid range coupe to take on the BMW 3 Series. Now technical details are beginning to emerge.

Various computer generated mock ups have been produced to complment stories in magazines such as the UK’s Autocar and the 4Car webdite. But we still reckon the Nuvolari concept (shown above) is the best pointer as to how the new coupe will look. As for powerplants, it’s a given that many of Audi’s enormous range of four and six cylinder diesel and petrol engines, starting with 150bhp petrol and diesel fours and ranging up to the 3.2-litre 255bhp FSI V6 petrol lump and the 233bhp diesel six pot. It’s also very likely that one or more high performance models will be offered. Obvious candidates include the 344bhp and 414bhp 4.2-litre V8 engines found in the S4 and RS4 respectively. The A5 will likewise share many of its underpinnings with the next A4 saloon, due out in 2008, and mirror that car’s front and four-wheel drivetrain layout. Indeed, there’s not a great deal that’s come to light this week that you couldn’t have guessed starting from the premise that the A5 is essentially a next-gen A4 dressed in Nuvolari sheet. Still, that’s a pretty attractive proposition. The A5 coupe is expected to go on sale sometime in 2005.
