Audi dumbs down new A2

New model an alloy-free zone
The original A2 (shown above) was a fabulous little car. It was beautifully engineered from lightweight aluminium. It was a thoroughly modern, efficient and responsible car optimised for today’s crowded road conditions. It boasted confident, minimalist styling that shames Audi’s current predilection for door-sized grilles and fussy swage lines. And it was an utter failure. So, it should come as no surprise that the new A2 will be little more than a rebodied VW Polo.
At least, that’s what German mag Auto Zeitung is reporting. Specifically, the new A2 will be based on the PQ 24 platform which will see service in the next VW Polo and Skoda Fabia models. Consequently, it’s almost sure to be a conventional steel monocoque design, rather than an aluminium space frame. According to Auto Zeitung, it will be “a typical Audi, showing sportiness and design aesthetics, but also remaining below the Audi A3 price tag”. And unlike the original A2, it probably won’t be in the least bit innovative.
