Audi fleshes out its future: Q5 SUV, A5 coupe and S3 superhatch on the cards

S3 due later this year
Audi has announced the latest salvo in its ongoing new product assault. Following the impressive new alloy chassis TT and monstrous Q7 SUV comes official confirmation that the Q5 mid-sized SUV/crossover vehicle will be built at Audi’s Ingolstadt facility starting in 2008. But if news of yet another fancy four-wheel driver is enough to foster suicidal tendencies, take a deep breath and remove the pencil from your nose. Because Audi has also come clean on the upcoming A5 coupe and S3 superhatch.

Audi hasn’t released any detailed information regarding the new Q5, preferring the rather bland assertion that the new car is, “an overtly sporty vehicle that will add an important product to the Audi model range.”
As for the new A5 coupe, it’s due to go on sale in the first half of 2007 and is expected to take its styling cues from the super-sexy Nuvolari concept of 2003. At last, BMW’s slightly smug 3 Series coupe will be getting some serious competition from Audi.

The A3-based S3 superhatch, meanwhile, is just around the corner – sales start later this year. Audi has not dilvuged full tech specs for the S3, but the VW Golf R32 no doubt provides some pointers. V-Dub’s latest riff on its compact narrow angle V6 and the Haldex part-time four-wheel-drive system are likely to feature. Both confirmation and denial of the rumoured RS3 uberhatch (with twin-turbo 350bhp-plus V6 power) were conspicuous in their absence from Audi’s announcement.
