Crossbow ready to fire
Not exactly. For months, rumours have been circulating regarding a possible tag team twixt Audi and Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM. The general gist was a light weight sports car powered by the VW group’s blown four-pot and in many regards picking up where VW’s stillborn EcoRacer left off. More recently, KTM’s head honcho, Stefan Pierer, dished a few official details on the project and now further factoids are appearing on the web…
German rag Auto Motor und Sport brings us the latest details including additional powertrain and chassis specs. The VW-sourced turbo four-cylinder lump will be available in both 220bhp and 320bhp trim while the car’s all-in kerb weight is expected to hit the 700kg mark. However you slice it, the Crossbow (as A M & S reckons the car will be called) will be quick. The front axle is thought to sport an open-wheel design complete with mud guards as per Caterham Super Seven.
Reports variously indicate an anticipated annual production run of 500 to 1,000 units, while pricing is expected to hit the 30-40,000 Euro mark. The Crossbow will make its official debut at the Geneva motor show next spring.
Less clear is the car’s branding and positioning. Although the Audi connection is being trumpeted, it seems unlikely that the car will appear festooned with the famous four rings. Watch this space.
