Audi preps diesel TT

If it’s good enough for Le Mans…
With this year’s 24 Heures du Mans already in the bag thanks to the revolutionary diesel-powered R10 racer, Audi is planning to cash in on its competition success with an oil-burning version of the new TT coupe. According to Wolfgang Hatz, Audi’s engine and transmission head honcho, a diesel version of the original TT was developed two years ago but was canned in favour of an oil burning variant of the second generation coupe…
During a chinwag with trade publication Automotive News Europe, Hatz didn’t fancy revealing exactly which engine would power the upcoming derv-drinking TT. But he did concede that the TT’s transverse engine bay won’t accommodate Audi’s 2.7-litre or 3.0-litre diesel V6s, both of which are designed for longitudinal installation. By process of elimination, therefore, the most likely candidate is none other than the VW Group 2.0-litre four pot lump, currently available in 138bhp and 168bhp trim. Winding the turbo-charged unit out to around 200bhp shouldn’t be beyond the wit of Audi’s powerplant engineers.
Of course, the TT won’t be the first oil-burning premium coupe around. BMW’s ubiquitous 3 Series two-door aside, the Alfa Brera is already available with a 197bhp 2.4-litre unit. The diesel TT is expected to hit the road following the debut of the TT cabriolet. The Geneva auto show in March ’07 looks like a safe bet for a first public outing.
