Audi Q7 V12 TDI: The world’s most powerful diesel car

Le Mans-inspired uber-SUV
It’s exactly what the world has been waiting for. A five-metre,
2.5-tonne SUV powered by a V12 production diesel engine pumping out
precisely 493bhp and 737lb/ft. This, friends, is the new Audi Q7 V12
TDI…
Of course, following Audi’s conquest of the Le Mans 24 sports car race courtesy of the diesel V12-powered R10, it was only a matter of time before an oil burning lump sporting a similar configuration popped up in a production Audi. But few would have picked the Q7 uber-ute as the vehicle of choice.

Whatever, the Q7 V12 TDI certainly racks up a long list of world records. It’s the first V12 production diesel car engine, the most powerful oil burner on the planet and sports the first 2,000 bar common rail piezo-injection system, built by Bosch. Unlike Audi’s existing 90 degree V-configuration diesel units, the new V12 is a 60 degree design. The German outfit reckons this makes for a more refined oil burning lump.

Performance, needless to say, is monumental. The new mill slings the massive Q7 to 62mph in just 5.5 seconds and on to an electronically limited all out of 155mph. Drive goes to all four wheels via a six-speed slushbox. Euroland fuel economy, meanwhile, is quoted at 11.9 litres per 100km. If our fag-packet calculations are correct, that translates into 20mpg in old money (edit: the official combined cycle figure is 23.7mpg).
No word as yet on UK availability and pricing for the Q7 V12 TDI.
