New FSI V8 for Audi A6 and A8

More power? Yup, but more efficient, too
More power, lower fuel consumption and a reduction in tree-torching CO2 emissions. An across-the-board win, therefore, for Audi’s new 4.2-litre FSI V8. Previously seen in the Q7 luxury SUV, the new engine now finds its way into the A6 and A8 saloons. Cue much rejoicing…
While power and torque increase only marginally from 335bhp and 310lb/ft to 345bhp and 324lb/ft, compared with the outgoing 4.2-litre bent eight, Audi’s real achievement is pulling that off while also improving both fuel economy and emissions. The A6 4.2’s CO2 output, for instance, drops from 283g/km to a slightly less planet-ravaging 257g/km, while the same model’s combined-cycle gas guzzling improves to 26.1mpg from 23.9mpg.
As for performance, the new engine drags the A6 from zero to 60mph in just 5.9 seconds, with the A8 4.2 FSI requiring 6.1 seconds for the same sprint. Both models are electronically limited to 155mph. With that sort of shove on offer, you have to wonder whether the painfully pricey V10-powered S models are worth the bother.
The A6 4.2 FSI is on sale now for a mere £44,475. The A8 4.2 FSI can be had for £58,305 and £61,685 for the long wheelbase model. That is all.
