Bargain basement, rear-drive Gallardo

Rear drive comes to the Gallardo at last (but brings Audi power with it)

Another newsflash from UK rag Autocar, this time concerning a luscious new Lambo.

Allegedly, the Italians are preparing to release a cut-price Gallardo powered by the 4.2-litre, 414bhp V8 found in the Audi RS4. The really interesting bit is that the car will be rear-wheel-drive, rather than four-wheel-drive as for all current Gallardos.

Quite why Lamborghini hasn’t already released an “S” version of the current V10 car with less weight and rear-wheel-drive is a constant mystery to Newswheel. The car is literally begging for that sort of treatment. However, in a similar tradition to Porsche’s glacial product development, we assume strong sales of the existing model dampen enthusiasm for rolling out new variants (the new Spider notwithstanding). Whatever, although it’s a seriously superb unit, we’re not sure dropping an engine so closely associated with Audi into the Gallardo will do the car’s image any good.

UK pricing for the new car is predicted to be less than £100,000.
