BMW 3-Series coupe: death by folding hardtop?

Curtains for the classic coupe?
US website InsideLine has the skinny on the upcoming replacement for BMW’s 3-Series coupe. And it goes something like this: there won’t be one. If you’ve just sprayed the Sunday morning coffee all over your LCD panel, well, you’re in good company.
Instead, the much-rumoured (and much photographed by the usual tree-dwelling scoop photographers) E90 coupe-cabriolet with a folding hard top will replace both the existing E46 coupe and cabriolet.
If true, it’s a brave and surprising move. The 3-Series is the meat, drink and two veg of BMW’s range. And as the conservative new E90 model proves, BMW isn’t keen on taking risks with it. It also goes against the current trend of ever finer market granularity in terms of niche products. The general idea is that adding more niche models isn’t a zero sum game. The more you make, the higher your overall sales. In short, never go with just one model when two will do.
However, there’s just one problem with the story. It might be complete bollocks. As the pictures below prove, BMW has almost certainly developed a conventional fixed-roof E90 coupe.

There’ll be no new 3-Series coupe…except this one.
