M3 performance on the cheap?
The first BMW 335i road test results from the usual print publication suspects are beginning to roll in. Topping the table is US rag Car and Driver which managed to extract a zero-to-60 time of just 4.9 seconds. And that, folks, is near-as-dammit as quick as an E46 M3…
Automobile Magazine and Auto Zeitung have also published figures, the former managing 60mph in 5.1 clicks and the latter posting a zero-to-62mph dash of 5.3 seconds. Intriguingly, Auto Zeitung’s figures are for the slushbox-equipped model which also hit 100mph in just 11.9 seconds – nearly a second quicker than Automobile mag managed in a manual 335i and only slightly slower than the aforementioned E46 M3.
In the unlikely event that it’s slipped your mind, may we remind you the 335i is powered by BMW’s new 3.0-litre 306bhp straight-six and comes complete with those allegedly lag-free parallel turbos, lightweight magnesium construction and, well, all that jazz. The 335i is yours for £33,420.

But will it handle as well as the M3? Or do you just pay a premium for the extra exhausts and big alloy wheels?
