BMW clocks up another International Engine of the Year award

Same old…in more ways than one
That’ll be three years on the trot, then. Yup, BMW has topped the tables again in the International Engine of the Year award. This year’s triumphant lump is the twin-turbo six pot fitted to the 335i. BMW took the gong in ’05 and ’06 with the V10 screamer from the M5 and M6 models…
BMW also took the spoils in the 2.0 to 2.5-litre category with its 2.5-litre straight-six petrol engine. Even the latest Mini clocked up an award courtesy of its new direct injection 1.6-litre lump (developed in cooperation with PSA Peugeot Citroën and just a tiny bit better than the wheezy Chrysler-sourced mill in the previous car).
Impressive though the award winning twin-turbo 3.0 six is, it’s actually based on the outgoing aluminium-block M54 straight-six engine, last seen in the defunct E46 3 Series. And not the fancy pants magnesium block item currently doing service in all manner of Beemers. Even BMW’s last gen lumps are better than the opposition, it seems…
