BMW E92 3 Series coupe: Image and tech spec frenzy

More pictures than you can possibly imagine…
With last week’s picture leakage now confirmed as officially official, we bring you a boat load of new snaps of BMW’s elegant E92 3 Series coupe. Oh, and full technical details of the launch models…
BMW has lined up a pair of petrol-powered models for the UK launch, the 325i and 335i. Across the channel, the range is filled out with a duo of 330 models, in both petrol and diesel trim, although these will be made available in the UK soon after the car’s 23rd September launch.
The 335i will be the headline grabber thanks to its beefy 306bhp peak output. With sequential turbos and direct injection tech, BMW claims its new blown six cranks out a virtually lag-free 295lb/ft across a mammoth 1,300 to 5,00rpm rev range. Performance is suitably swift, with 62mph coming up in 5.5 seconds and an electronically limited Vmax of 155mph.
As for the 325i, we’ve a feeling it will be an awfully complete car. It’s certainly no slouch. Peak power from the 2.5-litre straight-six is a four-door-matching 215bhp, which translates into a zero to 60 dash of 6.9 seconds and a top whack of 153mph. And all the while delivering a truly admirable 33.9mpg on the combined cycle. 40mpg motorway cruising might just be in reach. Indeed, it’s these impressive performance numbers that hint at the weight savings BMW has achieved with the new coupe. Thanks in part to the use of plastic front wings, the coupe is approximately 10kg lighter than its four-door sibling. Dramatic? Perhaps not. But welcome nonetheless in this age of creeping gargantuanism.
UK prices for these launch models are £28,090 and £33,420, respectively, for the 325i and 335i, making the 335i conspicuously good value in terms of bang-for-buck.
The 3.0-litre petrol and diesel models will roll out towards the end of ’06, while the new year will bring a pair of bargain basement 2.0-litre models, again in both petrol and diesel configurations.
Update:
US buyers will be offered a ‘tweener model with a 2.8-litre petrol six packing 230 horses and optional four-wheel drive. No news yet on UK availability on such a beast…
