BMW readies M1 coupé, plots reborn E30 M3?

Six-pot M Power engine gets new lease of life?

BMW’s latest V8-powered M3 coupé is a damn fine thing. But we can’t help mourning the loss of classic six-pot power. But maybe there’s no need. According to a recent report, BMW is preparing to drop the engine into the upcoming 1 Series coupé.
Even more tantalising, however, is the prospect of a lightweight Motorsport variant of the next 1 series, powered by a high output four-pot lump and designed to resurrect the finely honed driving experienced delivered by the original E30 M3…
According to Car Magazine’s sausage-side correspondent, Georg Kacher, the new six-pot 1 Series performance flagship will appear in the new 1 Series coupé late next year wearing an ‘M1’ badge. The venerable six cylinder engine, still doing sterling service at the top of the Z4 range and currently delivering 343bhp, is thought to be the BMW’s favoured engine option, though it will need work to meet upcoming emissions regulations.
Kacher kosher?
In fact, if Kacher’s info is kosher, BMW will be getting pretty serious with the 1 Series in the next few years. Coupé and convertible variants are confirmed and have been seen testing, while touring, crossover and even four-door coupe models could be on the way.
But the most exciting prospect has to be alleged reborn tii. The moniker is obviously a reference to ye olde 2002tii and it’s thought the power plant will be true to the tii tradition, too – ie a blown four-banger. Delivering approximately 275bhp, the new direct injection lump will be mounted well back in the chassis, deliver drive to the rear wheels and benefit from a low-fiction, low-inertia drive train.
The general idea, if you hadn’t guessed, is to resurrect the fine chassis balance and deft handling of the legendary E30 M3. Nice. Here’s hoping Georg is on the money with this one.
Anywho, the tii is said to be based on the next 1 Series, due out in 2012. In line with BMW’s latest CS concept car, the new 1 series is expected to be much sleeker than the stumpy, slab-sided styling of the current model.
