That 70s supercar...

Will anything come out of the many rumours regarding a possible new supercar project from BMW? Who knows. But if a production car does emerge, it definitely won’t be a dead ringer for the M1 Hommage concept, revealed at the weekend. Yes, it’s dramatic. Yes, it’s official BMW produce. But BMW says the M1 Hommage is nothing more than a 30th anniversary celebration of the classic M1 supercar…

Unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza 2008 di Villa d’Este in Italy, the M1 Hommage packs a pleasing number of cleverly reinterpreted styling features from original M1 of 1978. Yet it still strikes a thoroughly contemporary pose. And it’s absolutely massive, which becomes clear when the concept is viewed along side the classic M1. But is it beautiful?

Probably not. Nevertheless, odds are BMW is test driving certain aspects of its ever evolving design language with the M1 Hommage. There’s a good chance it contains some clues to the appearance of upcoming BMWs, therefore. That, after all, is the point of concept cars.

And it might just be a hint that rumours of a reborn M1, powered by a twin-turbo respin of the awesome V10 unit, aren’t so wide of the mark. You never know, such a machine might even turn up in time to coincide with a first world champsionship win for BMW’s reborn F1 team.
