BMW’s X6 crossover bagged and tagged

Can BMW succeed where the Mercedes R-Class failed?

BMW’s plans to build a crossover-coupe come SUV aren’t exactly news. But we’d no clear idea of what the new model will look like. Until now, that is. Those tireless, tree-dwelling snappers Brenda Priddy & Co have caught the X6, as it will be known, on the prowl in Germany.

Broadly speaking, the X6 looks consistent with the current post-Bangle BMW design vibe. Whether you jive with the latest look is another matter. But the crisp surfacing and sharp shoulder line certainly should come as no surprise.

More intriguing is the dramatic fall of the rear roofline – there will be no mistaking the X6 for your common-or-garden Volvo XC90-type soft roader. On the other hand, we doubt the rakish roofline does much for rear passenger or luggage space.

As the latest images show, the X6 is nearing production. It’s thought the car will be revealed later this year and go on sale in 2008.

Over and out.
