Brabus beefs up Mercedes SL600

730bhp, anyone?
With 517bhp and 612lb/ft on tap from a twin-turbo, 5.5-litre V12, Merc’s range-topping SL600 coupe-cabriolet isn’t exactly short on shove. Which makes you wonder what exactly is the point of Merc’s in-house 612bhp, 737lb/ft hot rod version, the painfully pricey SL65 AMG? Perhaps a stab at the title of the most pointlessly powerful roadster on the planet? If so, then bad luck to Mercedes and AMG, because German tuning house Brabus has peeled back the wraps on its own contender, the 730bhp SV12 S…
The extra 100bhp or so comes courtesy of a bump in swept capacity to 6.3-litres (the standard SL600 gets by on a piffling 5.5-litres while the SL65 sports the full 6.0), a billet steel crankshaft and uprated pistons and rods. Brabus has also bolted on a pair of larger turbos for good measure. However, it’s worth noting that the SL65’s 737lb/ft peak torque figure has only been improved upon by a symbolic 1lb/ft – blame the torque-handling limitations of the car’s automatic gearbox for that.
As for performance, the SV12 S is, well, fairly nippy. 60mph is yours in under four seconds, 124mph comes in 10.9 clicks and 218mph is just a foot flex away. What’s more, with peak power arriving at a scarcely believable 5,100rpm, safe to say the SV12 S will redefine effortless performance.
Rounding out the package are retuned suspension settings, 19- or 20-inch rims and the usual bumper n’ skirt body kit. Brabus has yet to reveal pricing, but depending on your vantage point, the SV12 S will either be ludicrously expensive compared to a boggo SL600 or a cheap and cheerful alternative Bugatti’s 1,000bhp Veyron.
