Cancelled: Ford GT

High profile casualty of “Way Forward” or all part of the original plan?
It’s hard to put a value on a project like the Ford GT. As a car that’s been buried in praise from motoring journos around the globe, compared favourably with the likes of Ferrari’s 430 and just generally lionised, it’s surely a roaring success. Unfortunately, the GT is knocked together at Ford’s Wixom plant, which is one of the facilities due for the chop next year under Ford’s “Way Forward” rescue plan…
However, Ford flatly denies the GT’s demise has anything to do with plant closures. Over to spokesford, Jim Cain. “It was our plan all along to wind up production on the 40th anniversary of the 1-2-3 victory at Le Mans,” Cain said. “It’s not being cancelled. It’s just run its race.” The date of that famous victory, by the way was June ’66. Which explains why production will end this September. Kinda.
