Caparo T1 hyper-car is go in Monaco

Zero to sixty in 2.5 seconds. Er, plums!
A power to weight ratio of 1,000bhp per tonne. A scarcely believable all-in kerb weight of 500kg. Zero to sixty mph in just 2.5 seconds. And a shopping car-busting fuel consumption rating of 32.5mpg. That’s the Caparo T1, on paper a little bit nippy and now apparently a reality following an unveiling ceremony yesterday in Monaco conducted by none other than His Serene Highness Prince Albert II. Previously known as the Freestream T1, this most hyper of supercars now has backing from Caparo Plc, a multinational corporation that supplies car parts to manufacturers across the globe. Production starts later this year with first deliveries in 2007, possibly…

As we reported back in February, the T1 is the work of a pair of ex-McLaren bods, Ben Scott-Geddes and Graham Halstead, boasts a two-seat configuration, a mid-mounted 2.4-litre V8 and the sort of claimed performance numbers that promise to make literally everything else on the road look very, very silly. If that sounds like hyperbole, suck on these additional figures: 0-100mph in five seconds flat, 0-100-0mph in less than ten seconds and peak cornering capability similar to a Le Mans prototype (around 3g).

His Serene Royal Highness scopes out the Caparo T1
Of course, it’s terribly easy to be cynical about the paper launch of yet another freakish ultra-car. Chuck a digicam over your shoulder at any major car show and you’ll hit half a dozen such vehicles, few of which ever make the transition to production successfully. But the T1 really does look a little bit special. And we’re all for any car that focuses on performance through light weight rather than big power. Here’s hoping the T1 makes the grade.
