Caparo T1 road racer up and running

Shakedown today, customer cars in March. Apparently…
“Fantastic achievement…proud moment…special team…strong message…” No, not excerpts from the latest party political conference. But bullish noises from supercar upstart Caparo following the first shakedown test of a T1 prototype. Caparo recently completed the first of two development prototypes of the ultra-lightweight carbon-fibre sportscar. The second is due to be built by Christmas and the first customer car scheduled to roll off the production line in March next year. Pretty ambitious, then…

Design director Ben
Scott-Geddes and engineering director Graham Halstead had the honours for the T1’s first run
Caparo expects to produce around 24 cars annually. But the T1 supercar is a mere
footnote in Caparo’s overall masterplan. “The Caparo T1 represents but
one-tenth of the business plan.” said Richard Butler chief executive of
Caparo Vehicle Products and…pause for breath…director of Caparo Vehicle
Technologies. “Our long term objective is to help the aerospace and
automotive industries to reduce the weight of their vehicles and hence
carbon emissions with affordable and practical composite solutions. In
essence, we’re applying highly technical lessons learnt from the
motorsport industry.”
In the unlikely event it has slipped your mind, the T1 promises to be rather nippy. Caparo’s plan is a kidney-mulching 1,000bhp per tonne power-to-weight ratio courtesy of an in-house 2.4-litre V8 cranking out around 500bhp and a commensurate kerb weight of 500kg.
