Retro coupe with Mercedes underpinnings
Chrysler Group President and CEO Tom LaSorda is the man on the trigger with the official word on the Dodge Challenger concept: It’s go for 2008. LaSorda dropped this widely anticipated bomb at the Pepsi 400 NASCAR race at Daytona over the weekend. The last of the original Challengers may have rolled off the production line way back in 1974, but with punters apparently going potty for the Challenger show car, a series production announcement was inevitable…
As LaSorda explained, “we haven’t seen this kind of spontaneous, passionate response to a car since we unveiled the Dodge Viper concept in 1989.” Chassis-wise, the Challenger is expected to be built on the Chrysler LY platform, a development of the LX architecture and in turn based on the mid-90s W210-vintage Mercedes E-Class. Engines are likely to be headed up by Chrysler’s 6.0-litre-plus V8 Hemi lumps.
No word as yet on pricing, precise availability dates and UK / right-hand drive availability. Over and out.
