Detroit debut: Jeep Wrangler

Strangely familiar
This is it, folks. The all new Jeep Wrangler. Yes, it really is all new, so no arguments please. As well as the blink-and-you’ve-missed-it new body styling, other carry-over features from previous Wranglers include detachable doors, a folding windscreen, separate wheel arch covers, the clip-on hard top plus soft top roof combo and exposed hinges and latches. As for chassis upgrades, don’t get any fancy independent-suspension ideas. The new Wrangler not only retains the off-road cred of its iconic predecesors, but also their crude but effective solid axles, front and rear.

So, we’re talking lazy, cynical rehash rather than a modern reinterpretation of a classic, right? Certainly, the hideous new interior looks phoned in from the early 90s. But there are indications that Jeep has made at least some effort. For starters, electronically detachable anti-roll bars have been added, which should help on-road handling without sacrificing mud-pluggability.

The 2007 Jeep Wrangler interior. Think catflap. Think tornado. Or perhaps it’s best not to think about it at all.
What’s more, the antediluvian pushrod straight six has finally been pensioned off in favour of reasonably sophisticated 3.8-litre overhead valve V6 capable of 205bhp and 240lb/ft. Tranny options are six-speed manual or four-speed slushbox. But if it’s proof you’re after that the Wrangler has finally entered the new millennium, look no further than the electric window lifts (a snap plug on the removable doors being the enabling factor). Such decadence has never before been seen on a Wrangler.

For now, the Wrangler is two-door only, but a long wheelbase four-door has been seen testing and is expected to launch later this year. Needless to say, Jeep’s focus in Detroit is on North American markets, so there’s no news on if, when and how the Wrangler may appear on our side of the pond.
