End is nigh for tiring Signum

Sector-straddling hatch never caught on
If you’re wondering why most car companies are so damn conservative, look no further than the Vauxhall / Opel Signum. GM’s Euro subsidiary was happily cranking out the usual conventional and anonymous fare when some bright spark had the great idea to build a cheap executive car that was built for passenger comfort, not street cruising cred. Well, it didn’t work – the Signum hasn’t sold well and it dies next year…
The news comes courtesy of the typically reliable German rag Auto Motor und Sport. Apparently, the Signum has only sold 8,040 units in the least year and must make way for the next Vectra model, which will appear late next year, at Opel’s German manufacturing facility.
Of course, although we basically jive with the Signum’s no nonsense approach to executive transport, it isn’t necessarily a great example of thinking outside the box. And in the image-obsessed exec car market, it probably never stood a chance. So, let’s hope its failure doesn’t put GM off other imaginative projects it may have on the boil.
The death of the Signum also leaves GM Europe in something of a quandary with the plain-Jane Vectra installed as the de facto flagship of the Vauxhall / Opel range. Here’s hoping the new Vectra is worthy of that (slightly) exalted status.
