Ferrari preps 4WD system?

“Insertable” 4WD
Rumours of all-wheel drive Fezzas have been floated frequently since the early 90s. The latest riff on the 4WD Ferrari involves a new system capable of entirely disengaging drive to the front wheels when required, thereby sidestepping the torque-sapping downside of a conventional arrangement.
According to our colleagues on ItaliaSpeed, the new rig is known at Ferrari HQ as “Insertable 4x4” and has been designed to be “easy and cost effective to implement, free from [torque losses] and which at the same time allows for an increase in performance, stability and traction control in all grip conditions."
Ferrari’s basic argument is that rear-wheel drive with a locking differential remains the weapon of choice for ideal high-grip road conditions. The new system, therefore, would only come into action to improve traction and stability in low-grip scenarios during which a secondary clutch would engage, delivering torque to the front differential. In theory, it’s the best of both worlds. In practice, of course, it remains to be seen what the potential kerb weight penalty of such a presumably complex system will be.
Should ItaliaSpeed’s report be accurate, it’s not known how soon the system will go on sale. However, it’s thought the technology will be offered on both mid- and rear-engined models.
