Fiat's military-spec mud plugger

It's a Fiat, Jim, but not as we know it
In the 80s it was Lamborghinis LM002 which provided the affluent 4x4 fraternity with the ultimate in bling. In the 90s that dubious honour transferred to the Hummer, and now in the mid naughties it seems Fiat fancies a shot at the title with the seven-tonne Oltre show vehicle, recently unveiled at the Bologna Motor Show.
Based on Ivecos family of existing LMV (Light Multirole Vehicle) military mud pluggers, the 4.9 metre-long Oltre is described as a promising candidate for adventure rallies.
Up front theres a 3-litre Iveco common rail turbodiesel producing a modest 185bhp with an un Panda-like 336lb/ft (456Nm) of torquey stuff. A six-speed auto disperses power to three differentials while all-wheel drive is only engaged when required.
Able to lug a three tonne payload, the tubular-framed Oltre can transport five persons at speeds up 130kph (80mph). With 50cm of ground clearance it can wade through puddles 85cm deep, or up to 2.35 metres deep (it says here) with special inlet and exhaust extensions, though as its overall height is only 2.05 metres, thats probably not something wed voluntarily attempt. Needless to say, it can also tackle steep gradients of both the lateral and longditudinal variety
Word is that the Oltre (which means Beyond) could even make it to showrooms next year (you cannot be serious - Ed), though without the cach of either Lamborghini or Stormin Norman, we wouldnt bet on that.
