Ford wheels out Mondeo the Third

Mondeo gets kinetic
Officially, it’s just a show car. But even Ford admits the New Mondeo concept, revealed today and currently being prepped for its worldwide debut at the Paris motor show next week, is a dead ringer for the all-new 2007 Mondeo…
The big news for Mondeo the Third is the appearance of Ford’s new “kinetic” design language, first used in production form on the S-Max and Galaxy MPVs. Indeed, the latest Mondeo (revealed only in estate form for now) shares much of its core architecture and technology with Ford’s newest people carriers. The new Mondeo also pinches several design cues from the Iosis concept shown last summer.

For the record, Ford defines the key “kinetic” design elements as:
• Full surfaces
• Strong shoulders
• Bold wheel lips
• A rising belt line
• A distinctive kick-up of the window graphic at the C-pillar
Moving inside, comfort, space and quality are the watchwords - much attention has been apparently paid to interior detailing. The latest revision of Ford’s rather epically-monikered Human Machine Interface (HMI) control system also makes an appearance. In reality, HMI is a relatively conventional setup which adds a large central LCD screen to the same steering wheel toggle switches seen on new Galaxy and S-MAX.
As for engines, Ford has announced that the Duratorq 2.0-litre TDCi diesel and a high-performance 2.5-litre turbocharged Duratec petrol engine derived from that fitted to the new S-MAX will be on offer, along with the more modest 1.6-litre Duratec petrol and 1.8-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engines. Full details will be released closer to the production Mondeo’s launch early next year.
Of course, the depressing fact for Ford is that, regardless of its virtues, sales prospects for the Mondeo are increasingly limited. C/D segment saloons have been rapidly falling out of favour with Euro buyers voting with their wallets for compact SUVs, people carriers and crossover vehicles. The Mondeo is no longer the do-or-die talisman model for Ford’s European fortunes.
And finally…The new Mondeo has also been developed in line with Ford’s Product Sustainability Index (PSI). We’ll hand over the reigns to Ford’s PR drones for this one and allow you to make of it what you will.
“PSI provides a basis for permanent evaluation and improved sustainability performance for new generations of vehicles across environmental, social and economic areas. This holistic approach to product development is an industry first, with the new S-MAX and Galaxy being the pioneer vehicles created with PSI.”
That is all.
