GT-R racks up multi-year UK waiting list?

New uber coupe going even faster than expected

Hardly a startling revelation given the uniformly rave reviews Nissan’s new road warrior has won. But it seems punters are a plumpin' for the new GT-R uber coupe in large numbers. No fewer than 700 orders were placed within 48 hours of the 473bhp brute going on sale in the UK. With production numbers strictly limited, if you haven’t placed your order yet, you’ll be in for a long wait. Still, at least it proves the environmental lobby, $100-a-barrel oil and  hysteria in global financial markets hasn’t done for the high performance, yet…

“The dealer order line lit-up on the 2 April with an unprecedented amount of orders being placed. This clearly demonstrates the UK’s passion for performance cars and the enthusiastic following that the GT-R has established,” quoth Paul Willcox, Nissan UK grande fromage.

Nissan UK also said it had put in a request to the Japanese mothership for an increase in the UK’s allocation of GT-Rs. Currently, the GT-R’s hand-built 3.5l blown V6 limits production to just 1,000 units per month. That, you understand, is for all world markets. As things stand, those 700 UK orders must represent several year’s worth of waiting list.

Final word on UK volumes will not arrive until May. First deliveries are expected in March 2009. If you are remotely serious about bagging a GT-R, we suggest you prime your cheque book and leg it over to www.gtrnissan.co.uk before it’s too damn late.

Here endeth our weekly press release on behalf of Nissan Corp…
