Large legal liability, anyone?
Whether Volkswagen’s self-consciously zany GX3 three-wheel concept car ever had any real chance of making it into production, we shall probably never know. It was originally thought the vehicle could be classified as a motorcycle in its North American target market, with obvious implications with regard to meeting safety regulations (no airbags, anti-lock brakes or impact protection of almost any kind required…). According to Autocar magazine, a source close to project revealed that VW is no longer confident the vehicle would be classified as a motorcycle. “It was somewhere between the two – a motor cycle and a car – and that is a problem,” quoth the unofficial spokesVolk. A problem as in, “let’s drop this project and pretend it never happened,” we presume. All of which is bad news for Lotus Engineering, which was carrying out ride and handling evaluations on the GX3 for VW. As yet, no official announcement has been made regarding the GX3’s production prospects one way or the other.
